They need as much direct sunlight as possible on the solar panel, which is on the top of the unit. We do not list lumens but it is the approx. equivalent of a 3w bulb.

Ordered 2 lights. One doesn't work at all, unless you shake it! The other works but not really very bright.

I bought three Canterbury lights in Spring last year. They look great in my small town garden, very 'architectural', but I have a couple of niggles. First, it's quite a large unit for such a small light output, the operating part being just the top 3/4 inch and the rest an empty cylinder. The lights are quite bright to look at, considering the LED is only a tiny chip, but they seem to illuminate very little around them. Perhaps more importantly, the charger heads did not survive six months outdoors before they stopped working. Changing the batteries didn't help. The internal connections had rusted and an irremovable bloom like a sort of cataract had developed over the solar panel tops. They are not weatherproof! Solar Centre were brilliant and replaced the heads free of charge, as it were. The new ones are still going strong, I've noticed a small internal design change has replaced the metal switch housings with non-rusting plastic, but I did not dare put them out during the winter so I can't really tell yet if they're better. I plan on buying at least couple more, but with reservations - I shall be ordering spare chargers to go with them, as I don't have a lot of confidence in their longevity and have neurotically taken to switching them off at night, on my way to bed, in the hope that they will last a bit longer!

This light is easy to install. Even I managed it, and it's straight, so it's pretty idiot proof! It looks very smart, however it's not quite as it shows in the picture on the website, so it looses a star for that: the metal has a warm tone to it making it look more gold rather than silver, which is disappointing. I have ended up positioning it in the front rather than the back as intended, as it is too obviously a different colour metal to my other silver solar lights. The light itself has a pleasant glow, but it's not enough to help me get my key in the door, so it looses a second star. I've positioned it right next to the door frame and my front door is south facing so this is a real shame. It's an attractive ornament, and it pleases me enough not to bother return it, but if you want a practical light then get something else.

these lights are just perfect for what we want. Also they stay on longer than we expected.

They look great - we bought 2 for either side of our front door and they do give a nice, consistent glow they don't give off enough light to be able to see what you are doing trying to find the lock in the dark.
